In 1965, Gordon Moore astutely predicted the remarkable strides in technology, accompanied by a simultaneous reduction in manufacturing costs. Today, we are fortunate to have an abundance of incredible sensor and communications technology at our disposal, which is further enhanced by advances in artificial intelligence techniques – all at affordable prices.

Yet, despite the introduction of numerous impressive tech solutions through innovative research or clever marketing, many of these fail to become everyday tools for conservation managers. The distinction between tech solutions that endure and those that fade away often lies in the successful on-the-ground implementation and integration of these systems, rather than the innovative components they are composed of.

At Contemplate Wild, our mission goes beyond simply embracing innovation. We strive to excel in the real-world integration and implementation of technology in conservation. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology, science and practical application, we aim to unlock the true potential of these advancements, enabling conservationists to make informed decisions that have a lasting positive impact on wildlife and their habitats.

Granaat Roes is the brainchild of Ansa O’Kelly, and the business brings joy and colour to many women’s hearts, households, and communities. Not only to the clients who come to us with the most wonderful project ideas but also to the five women who work here (some from previously deprived backgrounds and sole breadwinners for their extended families), surrounded by the most beautiful designs and tangible textures. Ansa’s son Runen has Down’s Syndrome and lends a welcome hand from time to time – of course with the same contagious enthusiasm and joy.

What’s in a name, you might ask? Well, proud and talented owner Ansa O’Kelly embarked on this almost “out of the blue” after inspiration at an art market, and from nothing more than just the thought that the name should be a fruit. And if there is such a thing as a down-to-earth fruit and one that exudes an almost exotic presence, the pomegranate is certainly one that remains the longest (and almost unscathed on the tree, unlike most other fruit).

But a fruit alone just feels wrong, almost like a lost swallow on a branch in the late autumn. Ansa’s wise mother Ina then suggested that the word “Roes” would fit her daughter’s project perfectly. Partly how Granaat and Roes falls on the ear but also because of the colour that echoes the dimply cheek of a ripe pomegranate. And everyone knows that Ansa loves things that look earthy, natural, and rusty, whether it’s an old-fashioned earthenware bowl or pair of scissors from bygone days, forgotten on the table and ended up in the photograph almost as if by chance. Ina drew a watercolour ‘granaatjie’ for the logo, and voila – that is how Granaat Roes got its name!
